Deprecated Custom Entity Icon 66×48

Recently I posted a tutorial on setting up icons for custom entities. Turns out some of my tutorial was incorrect (Recently corrected)! A friend, Matt Webb was reading through the tutorial and pointed out that MSCRM 2011 no longer uses the 66×48 image size. At first I didn’t believe it, as the help for MSCRM 2011 explained what each icon size is used for. That, along with my previous knowledge on the version 4 icons caused me to go in to denial.

However, Matt proved me wrong by performing a quick test where he uploaded the 16×16 and 32×32 icon sizes. With these two icons set, all 3 places where the icons show were displaying the new icon! Plus removing the 32×32 and adding a 66×48 cleared the icon from the form view, leaving only the default custom entity icon being displayed. BUSTED!

So whats happened? it looks like Microsoft no longer use the 66×48 size but they have forgotten to update the interface and help for this section from version 4. I’m not sure why they have decided to remove the icon size. Maybe people were complaining that creating 3 icon sizes was too time consuming. Or 66×48 is quite a¬†bizarre size. Icon packs normally come in 16×16, 32×32, 64×64 or 128×128 so maybe the resizing was causing issues for people. Whatever the reason, listed below is differences between MSCRM 4 and MSCRM 2011

Microsoft Dynamics 4 Icons

  • 16×16 – This is the icon that is displayed alongside records in grid views.
  • 32×32 – This is the icon that is displayed within the outlook client when viewing entities within the sitemap groups.
  • 66×48 – This is the icon that is displayed on the entity form.

Microsoft Dynamics 2011 Icons

  • 16×16 – This is the icon that is displayed alongside records in grid views.
  • 32×32 – This is the icon that is displayed within the outlook client when viewing entities within the sitemap groups.¬†This is the icon that is displayed on the entity form.
  • 66×48 – Not Used!!!

This is probably old news to most but it shocked me today!
