Before you get excited this is a blog about an attempt to use MSCRM dashboards to dashboard RSS Feeds. I’m going to be straight with you, I think this is a failed attempt! Didn’t see that coming huh? However, I wanted to demonstrate the outcome as it might be good enough for some people! Also I’m going to point out that with my first attempt I wanted to keep things as simple as possible. We are talking SUPER SIMPLE!
Let me explain where this has come from and why I wanted to give it a go. In an attempt to keep up to date with the world of CRM I follow many many blogs. Like any sane people I like to dashboard my feeds I am following so that I can quickly see the most up to date blogs. I actually use Netvibes to do this. So the first thing I do when I get to work is open up CRM to see what I am doing, and open up Netvibes to see whats happening with CRM. I thought it would be nice to have my feeds opening up inside of CRM.
The first thing that sprung to mind was dashboards. These are meant to show snippets, or visual representations of data thats meaningful to you. A great place for feeds right!? Well maybe not judging by the result I got. I basically created myself a 2 column regular dashboard. The idea being that feeds can be long so hopefully 2 columns would give me ample space. I decided to simply point to the feed and the blog roll of my web site using the IFrame option. I wanted to compare the difference between viewing the full site to the RSS feed. The result I got, well a picture paints a thousand words…
I did try tweaking the settings and referencing other blogs but we all had the same problem. Each blog took up a lot of space and didn’t actually show much information. I do have some ideas on how to achieve a nice feed reader within the dashboard. These ideas would require quite a bit of development time though 🙁 So I am wondering has anyone got any quick ideas of how I can dashboard my feeds!?
I have done some searching on the topic in google but if you search on keywords like MSCRM RSS Feeds all you get back is the feeds to everyones blogs on MSCRM!!!!
