In Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4, to make CRM externally facing you had to configure the internet facing deployment tool. This would enable you to access CRM externally through forms based authentication. In Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Microsoft have decided to ditch forms based authentication for claims based authentication.
This change worried me at first! Informing a client on how to setup IFD, configure their DNS and relevant internal routing was painful enough in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4. In CRM 2011 we now need to configure a few extra layers. Extra configuration sitting on more configuration means a greater risk of something going wrong! Plus configuring those extra layers maybe something we as CRM consultants need to convey across to our clients.
Today I came across Microsoft documentation and video tutorials around setting IFD up for CRM 2011. After spending 30 odd minutes watching the video tutorial I was able to set up IFD and get it working within my development environment. The video tutorial is fantastic and goes through all the stages required for setting up IFD. I’d urge anyone who deploys Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 to watch it.
